Mesothelioma characteristically displays a prolonged latency interval; in the majority of instances, by the time the disease is diagnosed, the only available treatments are palliative. But Dr. Anne Tsao, Associate Professor of Medical Oncology at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, believes it doesn’t have to be that way. “Sometimes primary care physicians assume there’s nothing that can be done,” she says. “But if we see patients early enough, there are a number of options, including surgery.”

Dr. Tsao is widely heralded as one of the world’s leading experts in the fields of malignant mesothelioma and thoracic oncology. As Director of M.D. Anderson’s Mesothelioma Program, Dr. Tsao leads a team of over 30 highly trained medical specialists who focus on the development of more thorough and precise methods of staging the disease, so that treatment options can better fit the pathology profile while unnecessary and ineffective therapies are avoided. “We use the latest techniques all the way through the process from staging, to the most accurate radiation techniques, to running a variety of clinical trials,” Dr. Tsao notes.

Dr. Tsao attended the University Of Chicago’s Pritzker School of Medicine and went on to complete an internship and residency at Indiana University in Indianapolis, before pursuing a fellowship at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas. Upon completion of her fellowship, Dr. Tsao joined the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center’s faculty.

Dr. Tsao’s research focuses on innovative treatments for malignant pleural mesothelioma that include gene therapy and immunotherapy. She’s overseen studies examining the effects of smoking on the prognosis of non-small cell lung cancers (including mesothelioma), and advocates for the use of proactive therapies—for example: chemoprevention—to suppress the possible onset of cancers in asbestos-exposed populations. Dr. Tsao’s pioneering research into the effects of src kinase on malignant mesothelioma cells led to a set of clinical trials involving the use of protein inhibitors. In addition, she has been the principal investigator on five other mesothelioma clinical trials at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center.

In addition to her clinical work, Dr. Tsao is a frequent lecturer and chairperson on mesothelioma and its therapies at symposiums around the world. She has authored or co-authored 30 peer-reviewed articles in such journals as The Journal of Thoracic Oncology, The Journal of Clinical Oncology, Molecular Cancer, Cancer, The International Journal of Cancer Prevention, and The Annals of Thoracic Surgery. As principal investigator, Dr. Tsao has also been the recipient of research grants from both the National Institute of Health and the Department of Defense.
